For homework, students were to summarize a current event in genetics and then write a paragraph reflecting on how the article affects them. The students for this lesson will stand up in front of the class and present their current events, and during presentations the students will cmplete a table (so they pay attention), and then we will have a class discussion about the articles/ topics presented. This kills 2 birds with one stone. First, students will get a glimpse of genetics in the real world outside of the classroom as it pertains to careers, research, current topics etc. Second is the oral component where they discuss their summary of the current event in genetics they found then reflect on it (why/how it affects the student and why they picked the event).
Objectives:
Students will be able to connect genetics in the classroom to real life by way of researching a current event in genetics
Students will be able to summarize the key points of the news article they chose
Materials:
Students current event
Students summary/reflection
Chart for grading peers
Opening:
The students will present their current events today. When they enter the classroom they will get handed a table to complete that they will fill in as their peers present, to keep them on task and help organize the important concepts of each presentation. I will begin class by telling my students that the more exposure they have to newspapers and current events the more likely they are to be aware and interested in learning and reading. Including current events in the school curriculum can go a long way toward developing lifelong newsreaders. It allows students to relate concepts they are learning in genetics to the study/research in genetics going on current. It will help students realize/value the purpose of such work. Each student will have 6 minutes to read their summary and reflection and answer questions posed by the students and teacher.
Learning Activities:
Each student will present their current event (summary and reflection) (6 minutes) see currenteventdoc for what needs to be included, up in front of the classroom. This should exercise the students oral speaking/presentation skills. I am looking for students to speak slowly and clearly to their audience and for them to have good eye contact while their peers will fill in a table (see eventchart) including the title of the article, the author, the source and three main points that they thought were interesting for each students presentation. This is a graphic organizer of sorts to organize the information they learn from the current event presentations. This will ensure students are focused and paying attention and can get the most out of their peers research. The presenter will be graded on their presentation ie eye contact and fulfilling the time requirement separately from their summary and reflection.
Closing:
I will collect all the charts from every student and their summaries/reflections, and reiterate why we did these presentations and current event research in the first place which is to connect genetics in the classroom to the outside world/reallife experiences. I will go around the classroom and ask which current event was most interesting to them (only 7 students in class) and why very briefly. I will remind them of their transcription/translation questions for homework and tell them to have a great weekend.
Assessment:
Graded on presentation and summary/reflection
Homework
Questions from transcription/translation simulation if not finished in previous class
